Durham Police HQ
This is a one day safety event including presentation on road safety, driving lesson, drink and drug awareness session, talk by fire department staff, driving simulator and vehicle safety demonstration.Trinity Solutions were invited to attend for a 3rd year in a row and it was a great day. The main focus was that of making young people aware of the many dangers facing young inexperienced drivers.

What did we do?

Students from our motor vehicle workshop attended the event, listened to a presentation on the dangers of reckless driving, speeding and showing off. Students were shown a slide presentation of accidents, injuries and fatalities that have happened in the Durham - Cleveland area within the last 10 years. Many learners were shocked at the number of young drivers who were involved. One student said that what he had just seen would put him off from ever speeding and acting in a dangerous manner-mission accomplished!

Overall comments.

The day was informative for all learners in the various aspects of road safety. Everyone was generally well behaved and listened to all the information that was presented. Students gave good feedback about the day and it is our hope that this will change their outlook on how to behave when they become drivers.

Our Triathlon Winner

Where were you before?
I was a Joiner for Kier North Tyneside for10 years.

What drew you to this field?
I wanted more of a challenge from my work and felt that I had a lot more to give. Working with apprentices was what I enjoyed most about my previous job so i'm very excited to work with these young learners.

What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time a training for and race triathlon. I am the current indoor sprint triathlon world record holder. That's a 750m swim, a 20km bike and a 5km run.

Congratulations Lee!

Commendable

Lee is a very determined individual, and has always applied himself to any task set. He enjoys a challenge and never wants his personal learning difficulties to be in the way of his progress. Lee is polite, very communicative and builds positive lasting relationships well. Lee completed his IMI Level 1 Motor Vehicle Mechanics qualification along with his Functional Skills Maths and English.

Lee progressed onto the ESF project with Trinity Solutions. Whilst on the ESF programme, he was determined to have the necessary skills and qualifications. So with support to update his CV and create a letter of application, he was given assistance to complete both job and apprenticeship application forms.

Lee went on a work placement and spent 4 months at National Tyres where he was able to learn from the staff in the garage and further develop his skills. He received excellent feedback from the manager and area manager of National Tyre's. When Lee was nearing the end of his placement there were no job vacancies available but he did apply for an apprenticeship with National Tyres in a different garage. Lee passed all of the personal selection criteria even had an interview with head office but was unsuccessful as he did not pass the literacy and numeracy assessments.

It became evident to Lee that his special educational need and his low levels of literacy and numeracy would be a barrier to his future, so rather than being disheartened, Lee kept attending his placement and wanted to keep progressing and learning. He refused to allow his learning difficulties to be a barrier to his future career aspirations.

After a few more months, Lee gained qualifications in Math, English and ICT and when a vacancy became available at National Tyres, he was placed. The management had no hesitation in offering the position to Lee. It is commendable the level of maturity, determination and integrity Lee has demonstrated whilst on his work placement. He has been a real credit to Trinity Solutions, a role model for future students on the programme and to date, Lee continues his employment and has been described by his manager as an asset to the garage.

Alex !

Star Award Goes To...

Alex began the sport and leisure programme at Trinity Solutions in November 2011. Being one of the original members of our sport and leisure group, Alex has played a key role in shaping the programme. He has been a role model to others, consistently striving to do his best. He has helped to create a positive environment for others learners starting the programme, by always being the first to offer support.

While on programme, Alex has gained level 1 qualification in functional maths, English and ICT. He has also gained a level 1 diploma in sport and active leisure and a level 2 in instructing circuit training sessions. Alex also took a short holiday to complete a level 2 qualification outside of his programme in gym instructing.

He has recently been successful in gaining part time employment with Casa Care and is continuing his studies to gain a job within Sports and Leisure. He plans to use this experience to help achieve his goal of becoming a Gym Instructor.

Alex was also successful in this year's UXL awards achieving the Star Award.

Jack's landed himself a placement!

Jack started Trinity Solutions in August of 2012 through our refer a friend scheme. He learned about us through a student who was already on our motor vehicle course. Jack completed induction and started in the workshop with a little bit of motor vehicle knowledge. His attitude and motivation were excellent and he quickly achieved the first part of his level 1. Jack showed the staff that he understood instructions and even showed other students how to complete tasks.

He achieved the 2nd and 3rd parts of his level 1 in Motor Vehicles within the timescale and was ready to start placement but explained to staff that he was already going to a garage on a Saturdays to gain experience and that he would start full time there once he had completed our programme.

Jack is now on an apprenticeship at Team Valley Land Rover and credits the experience he gained at Trinity Solutions for this. Come September he well be going to Gateshead College to work on his levels 2 and 3 in Motor Vehicles.

Great Job Jack!

Grant won the Achiever of the Year award and had afternoon tea with the Lady Mayor of Newcastle!

Achiever of the Year

Congratulations to Grant Carr who won the Achiever of the Year award at the Newcastle UXL annual achievement awards ceremony held at the Assembly rooms banqueting suite on Wednesday 13th March, the event was attended by the Lady Mayor of Newcastle, who was there to present the winners to with their awards.

Grant said this was a great achievement and hopes this will be the start of further success.
Grant is currently attending Trinity Solutions where he is working towards a City & Guilds level 1 Diploma in Basic Construction Skills.

After the event Grant received a message from the Mayor inviting him and all the award winners to afternoon tea as she was so impressed by their achievements.

Hard Work Pays!

Katherin's Hard Work

Katherine left school and went to work at a factory. She was made redundant and decided to join Salon Skills in April, 2012. Katherine was keen to do hairdressing and enjoyed all aspects of the course. She began her award in Introduction to the Hair & Beauty Sector and worked through her certificate and diploma. In her vocation Katherine did additional qualifications at level 2 awards in Skin Tanning Techniques and The Art of Colouring Hair.

Katherine really enjoyed her programme and worked hard to learn new skills. The best parts for her was working in small groups, as a result of this along with the support of her tutors, her confidence and attitude has improved to no end. Whilst on the programme Katherine attended the hub and achieved level 1 employability award, level 1 English, Contact Dermatitis and level 1 ICT.

Katherine has now moved onto level 2 VRQ Hairdressing Course and is also on a work placement.

Katherine’s hard work is paying off!

Along with these students we have some old familiar names who have returned to Salon Skills to pursue their level 2 careers. Students who are studying level 2 also have to secure a placement in Industry.

Our students have sourced placements for themselves and are gaining valuable practical experience not only when with us, but also in busy salons in the local area.

Students recognise the importance of industry experience and as a result are getting their names recognised, so that in the future they will stand a good chance of gaining employment from some of the salon owners.

Level 2 students have been bringing in models from home and we have a student from another programme, who is going for an interview coming in for a re-style as a model this week to help him look the part!

Level 2 students work on:

  • Colouring hair
  • Cutting
  • Styling

and all other aspects on hairdressing, all products used are of the highest standards, so feel free to pop up to the salon for a price list and more details. Caring and Amazing Anne

Earlier in September, Anne was praised for her caring and industrious work habits by her clients and tutors, recently she was awarded the well deserved recognition of the industry. Anne attended our annual awards ceremony on 16th October 2012 at the Hilton Hotel, Gateshead. She was nominated for the Amazing Apprentice Award and made it to the final 3. Anne then went on to win!

It didn't stop there; Anne was also nominated for the Client of the Year Award at our annual Customer and Client Awards. There were over 200 nominations and again Anne made it to the final 3. Our Amazing Anne completed the double and won this award too.

From starting as a Foundation Learning client at Stonham Tyneside Foyer, Anne has not only gained employment with us, but is completing her apprenticeship in Health and Social Care. Anne is truly an Amazing Apprentice and is Home Group's Client of the Year 2012.

Well done Lee!

Lee McFarlane joined Trinity Solutions on the motor vehicle training programme in September 2011. From his first day with us, Lee was determined to further develop his skills and knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance. Prior to starting with Trinity Solutions, Lee had worked within a garage on a weekend.

He completed all of his IMI motor vehicle qualifications and functional skills on time. Upon completion of his motor vehicle diploma, Lee went on to a work placement at National Tyres in Newcastle, which was arranged by the motor vehicle tutors. Lee spent 6 weeks at National Tyres, further learning from the staff in the garage and developing his skills. Lee received excellent feedback from the manager and area manager of National Tyre's. However, at the end of his placement, no job vacancies were available.

As Lee had finished with the Garage, Lee progressed onto the ESF project with Trinity Solutions. This is a course aimed at supporting young people into employment. Whilst on the ESF programme, Lee was supported to update his CV, create a letter of application and given assistance to complete job and apprenticeship application forms. Lee remained at National Tyres for his work placement. After applying for an apprenticeship with National Tyres, Lee passed all of the selection criteria and had an interview with head office. Becca
From Year 7, I went to Benfield School, Newcastle, however half way through Year 11, I became pregnant and didn't have the energy to go to school anymore.
But, I managed to attend enough of my school days to finish school and took my GCSE's.

I got a C grade in Maths, D grade in Science, E grade in English and an F grade in French. Not the grades I wanted, but I'm glad I stayed and tried.

When my daughter was 9 months old, I decided I wanted to return to education to improve myself and get more qualifications, so I started at Nacro on a Level 1 Child Care course.

Until I got funding to place my daughter in a nursery, my mother helped look after her while I attended Nacro, but it wasn't easy. I now had someone to look after, feed and care for besides myself, but I knew I could do it if I put my mind to it.

Since I started at Nacro, I have completed my Adult Literacy Level 2, which I knew was a knowledge gap for me, one that I wanted to fill. I am now working towards my Level 2 Diploma in Child Care. I'm also working toward my Level 1 Functional Skills ICT certificate.

Even though it has been hard work, I am really proud of myself for managing to carry on with my learning. I am glad I had the support needed to help me do it. When I finish my courses, I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, but I know I have the qualifications now and the confidence to go after my dreams.

Natalie
I attended All Saints School, West Denton from Year 9 but did not attend properly because I didn’t like school and found it boring. It wasn't until Year 10 that I realized I needed to learn and felt ready to make being at school, work out for me.

I started back to school, by attending half days for 2 weeks, then went back full-time and stayed full time until I left in Year 11. Because I had missed so much, I managed to get some of my GCSE's, and failed others, but, I now knew what I wanted to do and that was to get more qualifications. That is when I decided I wanted to go to Nacro.

I started in August 2010 on a Level 1 Childcare Course and found it really enjoyable. The course was good - I liked the variety of the work, and I got on with the girls who I attended with, and found the support from tutors helpful. I am now doing my Level 2 Diploma in Childcare and have gained valuable experience working with young children through placements.

I have also done my Functional Skills Entry Level 3, Maths and English as I didn't pass them at school. I've now moved onto Level 1 in these subjects as well as ICT - which I have always hated because I didn't think I could do it.
When I finish at Nacro, I am planning to go onto college to do Level 3 in

Childcare, something myself and others would never have believed possible a few years ago.

Taylor has been given the chance to go on programme and gain experience in animal care which is something she is interested in. Taylor has gained numerous skills while here at CSV and since doing her placement her confidence in talking to others has improved no end.

Here's what Taylor had to say about her placement:

What is the placement?
"The placement is as a volunteer at Stepney Bank Stables."
What have you learnt since starting?
"I have learnt how to look after horses and to work as a team with the staff and other volunteers."
What skills have you gained?
"I have gained communication skills and animal care experience"
Best bits?
"The best bits are grooming them and leading them around the indoor arena for lessons for children learning to ride."
Hardest bits?
"The hardest bits are tacking because it is very tricky and confusing. Also tightening the girth as they don't like it so they tend to turn and bite you."

CSV's interview with Michael

Michael is working at Community Furniture where he is gaining experience in warehousing. Michael is enjoying his placement so much that he volunteers to go in on more days.
What is the placement?
"Community Furniture is a company that collects donations from people who no longer what their furniture. They then sell it on to people who may not have enough money to buy new furniture."

"When I was at community furniture I was doing lots of different things around the warehouse and working on vans. Some of the duties include working in the warehouse arranging the stock and moving things around. I also when out on the vans collecting furniture and dropping furniture off as well. I was also working around the warehouse helping the customers finding out what they were looking for."

What have you learnt since starting?
"Since working at Community Furniture I have learned when you are in working in a working environment working in a team is easier to get the task done and it takes less time. I have also learned the best and easiest way to lift heavy furniture and learnt different ways of lifting heavy stock around the warehouse."

What skills have you gained?

"I have learned new skills whilst working at Community Furniture. When I first started I was struggling with getting into a routine and working in a team but as time when on I started to get the hang of things and learnt it was much easier working in a team. I have learnt new communication skills, team work skills and am more confident working with new people."

Best bits?

"Some of the best things about working for community furniture were working on the vans with new people as you have a good laugh with them and make new friends and it makes your work much easier."

Hardest bits?
"The hardest thing about working was waking up early in the mornings."

Caring Anne

Anne came to us in July 2011 on our Foundation Learning (FL) Programme at Tyneside Foyer. At 14, Anne had to take on the responsibility of being a carer for her mother and grandparents. As such, she had missed out on a lot of school, leaving with no qualifications and missing out on a lot of activities and experiences others take for granted. When Anne left school, her father quit his job to take over the care of her mother and grandparents.

Anne joined the FL programme as she was unsure of the kind of work she wanted to go into. When she started the programme, she didn't have a lot of confidence and worried that her family circumstances would hold her back from pursuing any kind of career.

While on programme, she worked on her functional English, Maths and ICT skills as well as vocational training and Personal and Social Development (PSD). As part of her vocation and personal development, Anne undertook an admin placement at Home Group head office in the procurement department. She was soon helping to source contractors and suppliers for repairs and cleaning products and travelling with the team to meetings to take minutes. Anne's communication and team work skills improved massively as well as building her confidence and literacy and ICT skills. As part of her vocational development, Anne undertook a taster placement at one of our Learning Disabilities (LD) services and soon decided that a career in the care world was where she wanted to be.

Anne achieved her qualifications in Vocational, Functional Skills and PSD, giving her the step she needed to move into an apprenticeship. She applied for a Health and Social Care apprenticeship vacancy in the N2 region LD team and was successful. She is now 8 months into her 12 month apprenticeship and is very much on track to complete it later this year.

Anne has been making a real difference over the past 8 months. Her manager, Tracey Jeffries, said: "Since starting her Health and Social Care Apprenticeship in November 2011, Anne has been very reliable, energised and has a caring nature which is demonstrated through the personal care that she offers to clients in Warrington Road LD service. Out clients have varying and complex needs and Anne has developed the skills to deliver individual support to meet their needs".

Jacqui Dowson, one of Anne's clients, said: "I like Anne, she is so canny, helpful and supports me. She is so cute and like a little teddy bear. She helps me clean out my fish tank and helps me with my jigsaw, especially the hard one."

I was 17 when I decided I'd like to begin a course in hair and beauty. I found out about Salon Skills through Connexions. I'm so pleased I joined as I have now gained a diploma in an Introduction to Hair & Beauty as well as making some great friends.

I had a good relationship with my tutors who were very friendly and helped me throughout my time on the course. I have now progressed onto a VRQ in Beauty Therapy before leaving to have my first child.

After my maternity I plan to go on to do my level 2 Beauty Therapy qualification. Salon Skills gave me the confidence and skills needed to reach my goals.

Lianne joined our Foundation Learning Programme with us approximately a year ago.

She started on an Award in Introduction to the Hair & Beauty, and then carried on to complete the Certificate and Diploma. Lianne also achieved her certification in Spray Tanning and the Art of Colouring Hair.

Lianne's confidence has blossomed and her enthusiasm and hard work has helped her to progress onto ALD Hair & Beauty Adult Learning NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing.

She is currently working toward her target within her timescales and is progressing very nicely.

Great Job Lois!

Lois Webster joined Salon Skills on their Foundation Learning's Introduction to the Hair & Beauty programme in October of 2011. She displayed great commitment to the course and as a result achieved her targets and received her Diploma.

Lois really enjoyed learning at Salon Skills, she found the tutors to be kind and very helpful and this made attending lessons a pleasure.

Lois has progressed onto Beauty Therapy at A.L.D. Hair & Beauty Academy and is currently working towards her NVQ Level 1. Good job Lois!

Hannah's Progression

Hannah came as a school leaver to Salon Skills. She began the Award in Introduction to the Hair & beauty she enjoyed the programme and worked hard to learn new skills. She later progressed on to the Certificate and then Diploma and has successfully completed these. Hannah has enjoyed the small groups and felt her confidence and attitude has grown as a result of the supported she has received from the tutors in sessions and being on a programme she is really interested in.

Hannah has now moved onto an NVQ Adult Learning Level 1 hairdressing Course and is on target to complete this. Next step - Adult Learning NVQ Level 2 hairdressing!

Lewis

Lewis Stephens joined the motor vehicle training programme 26-01-2012, he didn't have any knowledge of motor vehicles but he had a good attitude and was motivated.

Lewis completed the full IMI level 1 programme as well as all of his functional qualifications inside of the predicted timescale. He left the Trinity Solution's workshop and went into a placement at Tyrespot in Gosforth.

Lewis spent 6 weeks at Tyrespot working with staff in the garage and also helping with the sale of tyres. Good feedback was received from Tyrespot on Lewis' performance.

Lewis completed his placement and then went to National Tyres where he spent another 3 weeks and again we received good feedback. Unfortunately there were no full time vacancies at these garages but this did not stop Lewis in his bid to gain full time employment within the motor trade.

Lewis left Trinity Solutions in October 2011 and kept in touch by regularly coming in see staff and learners.

After many applications had been sent to local garages, Lewis still had not had any responses. Tyneside Training Services called Trinity Solutions to say they were looking for a young learner who was capable of completing a level 2 programme and working in a local garage as an apprentice. They required 2 learners for the interview process and we had no hesitation in putting Lewis forward for this position.

Lewis was successful and gained the apprentice position, he is currently attending Tyneside Training Services 1 day a week and City Auto Care the other 4 days. All the staff at City Auto Care is impressed by Lewis not only in attitude/motivation but also by his motor vehicle knowledge, this is something Lewis attributes to his time at Trinity Solutions.

Trinity Solutions wish Lewis all the best for the future, we are sure he will gain a level 2 motor vehicle qualification and also full time employment at City Auto Care when his apprentice finishes.

Markus' Big Break

Marcus started with Parks in July 2011 and was always keen to progress onto an apprenticeship in horticulture.
He completed his Foundation Learning achieving passes in Math, English, ICT and Employability. Vocationally he completed his Award and Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills level 1.

In August this year after being unsuccessful in several attempts to get gardening apprenticeships, his perseverance paid off when he obtained a gardening apprenticeship through Building Futures East working alongside the council apprentices. Marcus starts his Level 2 Horticulture NVQ in September at Newcastle College .With luck this could eventually lead to a full time job and career with the council.

NVQ Level 2 for Charlie

Charlie moved across to Parks from construction and straight away fitted in and showed himself to be a very capable, motivated and hard working individual.
He completed his Foundation Learning achieving passes in Math, English and Employability. Vocationally he completed his Award and Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills level 1.

In June this year he used that ability, motivation and hard work to send off a large number of applicants and obtained a Newcastle City Council Gardening Apprenticeship.
Charlie is currently getting high praise from his supervising staff and will starts a Level 2 Horticulture NVQ in September at Newcastle College on day release. With luck this could eventually lead to a full time job and career with the council. Well done Charlie.

Craig's landed a full time job at National Tyres!

I started Trinity Solutions in December 2010, at the time I was not sure that motor vehicle maintenance was what I wanted to do.

Well done Craig!

I was working part time in a shop in the Metrocentre to earn a few extra pounds on top of my EMA but knew that the retail industry was not for me. After working in the garage for a few weeks I realised that I enjoyed getting my hands dirty fixing cars, the staff showed me the correct repair procedures and helped me gain my Level 1 Award qualification.

At times I know I was hard work because I thought I knew best and I would question instructions. As time went along I realised that I could learn a lot more if I listened and completed the practical tasks that were set for me.

In July 2011 I finished the full Level 1 programme and started a placement at National Tyres and Autocare, Bath Lane, Newcastle.

The chance to work on a variety of customer cars really appealed to me, I was on placement 2 days and still working on my functional skills 1 day a week but I liked it so much I asked to work the other 2 days. As I was working at my placement 4 days a week and doing my Functional Skills on the other day, I had to finish my Metrocentre job. This was not a hard decision but I did loose out on money as I was only paid for 3 days.

During my time on placement I was asked to cover at different depots, this was new for me. There was a vacancy at another depot and Darren my manager put my name forward to the area manager saying I was "the best learner he had worked with in a very long time".

I started full time employment in November 2011 and I am really enjoying the work and the wages are not bad either. I would like to thank all the staff at Trinity Solutions for sticking by me and showing faith in me and helping me gain full time employment.

Battery chickens rescued.

Fans of the film Chicken Run will be surprised to hear of an unlikely escape for chickens in Newcastle.

Chicken Run

An education project in Byker, run by the crime reduction charity Nacro, has managed to save six chickens from short and and miserable lives on a battery farm.The chickens were all rescued from a crowded factory barn after animal care staff contacted Fresh Start for Hens, a local battery hen rescue group, and are being nursed back to health by staff and learners at the Nacro centre on Welbeck Road.

The Foundation Learning Animal Care programme, accredited by City and Guilds and run by Nacro, teaches young people to care properly for all kinds of animals - from turtles to tarantulas - as well as providing lessons in maths, IT and English. The course graduates go on to a variety of jobs in the animal world, from veterinary assistant to dog grooming.

Jess Highmoor, the animal care unit manager, said: 'At first I was worried that the chickens wouldn't survive. They were in a terrible state and could hardly walk due to the conditions in which they had been kept. But with proper care they are slowly making a good recovery, and we've now got more eggs than we can eat!'

We've had all sorts of animals here at the centre, but none of them have come to us in as bad a condition as the chickens. Thankfully the students here have been brilliant in providing the care the chickens need.

Ashleigh Dillon, one of the students on the animal care course, said: 'I think it's great because they have a second chance of a better life, and we get the experience of working with farm animals.'

Here is a picture of the FL learners from DCS East after they had completed their mosaic signs project.

The signs read "KEEP WORK AREA TIDY" and "RESPECT OTHER PEOPLES WORK." The lads spent a long time stencilling the letters onto the wall, then breaking up tiles into small pieces and using adhesive to stick them to the wall.

They worked really well together as a team, enjoyed the creative process and were very proud of their finished product.

Visit to Police Headquarters in Durham

A day in Linda's diary

Arrived on time. We went on trip to the Durham police station. At first we had a presentation with loads of slides to see what the risks when you speed in your car and the damage it can do to people sometimes causing death :( Then we headed on to the driving lessons, pass and go, I nearly crashed about 4 times but got the hang of it at the end. It was really good even though Jade was screaming at the back of the car in case I killed her :) ha ha.

We then got to go in the car with one of the qualified instructor's of skid cars. Had a good laugh doing that then had another presentation about what signs are on the road and what kind of materials they can use. It was bit boring at first but we left :/ then we done loads of other things after that like drunk driving, talked to the fire brigade people and they showed us a presentation and then a competition to see who could take the wheel off the fastest. Lewis in our group won. Well done! We all learnt loads of good things but learned bad things too about the risks of drink driving and speed driving had a really good day I would love to go back there one day :)

Adam started at DCS on a P4P programme, and then progressed onto E2E. During his time with us, he secured a placement with Derek Tait Builders where he gained experience of being in a working environment. This also increased his confidence levels and after 3 months on placement, Adam decided to return to centre where he completed his 6217 City and Guilds level 1 in Basic Construction. He also achieved his CIEH level 1 in Health and Safety in the Workplace. Adam was always keen to find employment and was motivated in his job search. He completed a CV at the Hub, and would update this regularly with his work experience and achievements. Adam then secured an interview with Warmsleys furnishings in Newcastle City Centre. He impressed at the interview and was asked to complete a 3 day work trial. At the end of the 3rd day, Adam was advised that he would be offered the position of trainee salesperson, and began employment with them on 13th September 2010.

As part of the ASDAN Employability Award one of our Mechanic groups arranged a residential to Kielder to complete their working with others unit. The group booked a cabin to stay overnight, arranged the transport, worked to a budget and agreed the work they would be carrying out for Parks and Countryside Training.

The group all met at the Hub and the first stop was Morrisons for supplies as the group also had to cook dinner and breakfast. When we arrived at Kielder we got straight on wire brushing and re-staining the cabin, the group all worked really hard to get the staining finished before it got dark. The group completed the painting on 2 ends and the rear of the cabin before the sunset.

Later in the evening the group cooked dinner and then we spent some time down at the lakeside building a fire. The group also enjoyed a social chat with tutors about their progression and how they are looking forward to learning more motor vehicle skills with Gateshead College, and we all enjoyed a few games to relax in the evening. The project was a great success and enjoyed by the whole group.

I am pleased to say that the group have all passed there Level 1 Employability Skills Award.

The staff at the hub would like to thank the group for all their hard work, commitment and making the residential an enjoyable experience.

Sponsored Bike Ride

On the 28th September 2010 John Hewitt, Bradley Johnston, Chloe Dempsey, Michael Rookes and Aidan Galbraith all took part in a 10 mile sponsored bike ride for Marie Curie Cancer (Supervised by Lorna Hendry, Andrew Butler & Mike Myers).

As part of their ASDAN Employability Award Unit 4 they had to come up with an idea for working with others. After much deliberation as a group it was agreed that we would do the bike ride. It took many weeks of planning to organise this event including bike hire, sponsorship, venue, date and cycle route. Every learner had their own task to complete and successfully completed it therefore completing their unit as part of their qualification.

As a group they managed to raise £65 for Marie Curie Cancer and a special thank you to Shaun Millington who unfortunately couldn't take part on the day due to illness but he managed to raise a big majority of the money.

Well done to all the learners who took part and raised money for charity.

Josh started with Parks in Oct 09. He moved to Newcastle from Durham mainly to get himself straightened out and make a new start.

He had various convictions and was under YOT supervision, attending DnA sessions while living temporarily with his sister.

Josh was a keen and able worker and wanted to get a job but his past record and no qualifications made it very difficult. He was determined to do better and started on an E2E (now Foundation Learning FL) course at Trinity Solutions Parks department.

In Sep, less than 1 year after moving to Newcastle, Josh progressed to a full-time apprenticeship with Newcastle City Council in the Highways department, he also was found accommodation at the Foyer and whilst at Trinity/Parks he passed his Foundation Learning in Maths, English, ICT and Employability as well as completed an Award in Practical Horticulture Skills.

He is now well on the way to turning his life around.

Tyson started with Parks in Sep 09. His one goal was to get an apprenticeship with Newcastle Council in Gardening. Whilst at Trinity/Parks he prepared for and passed his Foundation Learning in Math, English, ICT and Employability as well as completed an Award in Practical Horticulture Skills.

He achieved this goal in June 2010 following a thorough interview process where dozens of others competitors had applied.

Tyson is currently making excellent progress and has just started his Level 2 Horticulture course as part of the apprenticeship.

Steven was an early leaver from school and later attended the pre-16 programme at Trinity School. As a school leaver, Steven was uncertain about what he wanted to do, didn't have the needed qualifications, homeless and had some DnA issues.

Steven started on Trinity Solutions's Parks programme in June 09, he received help with and successfully completed his Math, English, ITC and Employability skills as well as gaining an Award in Practical Horticulture.

In Sep 2010 Steven progressed to a full-time Level 2 Horticulture Course at Newcastle College and also was found accommodation at the Foyer.

Congratulations Steven.

Jake started with Parks in Feb 10. He was very unsure of where to go next but with some guidance he came up with the idea of a career in Tree Surgery.

Whilst at Trinity/Parks Jake passed his Foundation Learning in Math, English, ICT and Employability and he also completed an Award in Practical Horticulture Skills.

Starting September, Jake began a Level 2 Arboriculture Course at Kirkley Hall College.
He is now keen to do higher qualifications in arboriculture after this course and his long term aim is to start his own business.

On the 13th July 2009 I started the E2E Hairdressing course at Salon Skills.

I had no experience and no qualifications when I came to Salon Skills. But I received loads of support and I passed all of my assessments and all of my units.

I tried to complete my Level 1 in Basic skills; I do feel like I could have tried harder in this. I've finished my file and now have my NVQ Level 1.

I feel more confident with myself and feel confident around others. I am ready to take my next steps and move on to my NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing at Newcastle College which I start on 6th September 2010.

Thanks to all the staff for putting up with me for the past year.

Newcastle United Learning Center's visit to the North East coast.

This was a trip to discover a little bit more about the castles, history and heritage of the North East and to then document the trip with video and photography, which would later be edited into a small film.

The trip provided Chris, Steve and Dave with an opportunity to demonstrate responsible behaviour within a group, to show respect for each other and members of the public and then to compile their feelings and views on camera.

When Shaunna came to Rathbone she had no qualifications and was unsure of what she wanted to do. Being a young parent also provided some challenges, but this did not stop Shaunna, since at Rathbone, we design our learning programmes to suit the needs of our young people. Hard work and caring guidance paid off, because Shauna has since achieved her C&G Level 1 Literacy.

Recently Shaunna experienced bereavement. Despite this, she was always on time, attended everyday, produced good work and maintained a good sense of humour. Shauna has a reputation for being positive. She dances when she is happy and after she has been praised. This makes her fellow students and tutors all smile. Her caring nature, positivity and team spirit won her the Achiever of the Month for April 2010 Award.

Keep up the good work Shaunna!

Ofsted, Matrix and IAG

In 2009 the E2E staff and learners at Stonham Tyneside Foyer were visited by Ofsted. What the inspector observed impressed her to the point of referring another Ofsted inspector to see how the E2E staff link Every Child Matters into their learners Curriculum.

The second Inspector found that the team use the ECM themes to guide their provision, curriculum, meeting agendas, learner forum agenda and session plans. This integration, he decided, was innovative and creative. He interviewed staff and learners and informed everyone that an article would be placed about the E2E team and learners on the Excellence Gateway website as an example of good practice to other training providers.

This recognition by Ofsted of the standards of work delivered by the E2E team is further reflected by the whole training team being awarded the Matrix Standard and all E2E training staff completing their NVQ Level 4 in Information, Advice and Guidance, a key part of their role.

In early March 2009, Vicky came to E2E in the hopes of gaining qualifications, increasing her employment knowledge and completing work experience as a housing officer. She was very motivated but a little daunted about working in a "classroom" environment again; she hadn't enjoyed school and left when she was 14.

In the following nine months Vicky made spectacular progress.

She worked hard in her Functional Skills sessions, working overtime in some instances, and this helped her achieve Level 1 qualifications in English, Maths and ICT. She then completed qualifications in New Clait and Clait Plus, too, before finishing the Text and Word Processing Certificate. She also completed a Freedom Programme course, which helped her to understand Domestic Violence and the issues some of Home Group's tenants face.

Vicky started a Work Placement at Stonham Home's Arthurs Hill project in April 2009. She worked alongside housing officers and as the placement was specific to her career she excelled and thoroughly enjoying her time there. She was so motivated to succeed that she wrote to numerous housing associations, including Home Group Ltd, and soon enough her name was being mentioned in board meetings!

Vicky's hard work paid off when she was offered a job with Home Group based at Belmont in Durham. She started there the day after finishing her E2E course and remains there now.

Vicky is hoping that in the future she can gain an NVQ in Housing that will further help her on her career path.

Aaron started his E2E programme in December 2008 and over the next year worked on placement with Joseph Richards and Sons Stonemasons in Newcastle. While on E2E, Aaron completed his Health and Safety qualifications as well as work on his Functional Skills in Maths and English. He also completed specific training from the British Register of Accredited Stonemasons at his placement on Polishing and Stencilling.

His placement mentor, Simon, took Aaron under his wing and trained Aaron in all aspects of Stonemasonry. Aaron excelled in this work and completed his NVQ Level 2 in Monumental Masonry, paid for by JR & Sons, as part of his placement. JR & Sons then offered Aaron a full time permanent position which he gladly accepted and is currently still in employment, enjoying every moment of it!

Lewis started Parks Jan 09. As a young father he wanted to be involved in his child's day to day upbringing while trying to get an education and to be able to support his family. On his first visit Lewis said that he wanted to work for the Council preferable in Highways. Lewis had started a college course, but did not like it because it was "too much class room stuff."

Coming to Parks was exactly what he needed, outdoor, hands on practical experience, with one day of literacy and numeracy assistance. While Lewis did not enjoy the class room atmosphere, with the support received at the Trinity's Learning Hub he achieved his level 1 in literacy and numeracy, progressed to Newcastle City Council on a Highways Apprenticeship in August 09, and, as part of his apprenticeship, he is doing his NVQ level 2 in Horticulture.

Recently Trinity Solutions applied for and were successfully registered to deliver the Institute of Motor Industries (IMI), Entry Level 3 Diploma in motor vehicle maintenance and Repair.
Initially seven learners were registered and started work on their portfolio's.

At the same time Trinity's management team worked to bring in Internal Verification Procedures (IV) to match the standards set by IMI Awards.

As a result all seven of the originally registered learners have achieved the award in Entry level 3 motor vehicle maintenance and repair.

So a big well done to Simon Appleby, Michael Douglas, Leon Dunkerly, Oliver Jopling, Daniel King, Chris Wright and David Scott. A lot of hard work went into producing the portfolio to the correct standards.

Further success followed when after our first External Verification visit, Trinity Solutions were awarded Direct Claims Status which gives us the ability to issue certificates on behalf of IMV.

Oliver Jopling joined us at Trinity in late July 09. Lacking in confidence, he took the introduction to Entry level 3 motor mechanics. A placement was arranged near his home and there he gained valuable 'hands on' experience working in the garage for 3 months, While at the placement Oliver received invaluable experience working on customers cars, but he needed more theoretical training. He was enrolled on the Entry level 3 introduction to Vehicle Technology programme; he worked hard and passed with flying colours, and is now working towards getting his certificate.

Young artists from the E2E programme at Stonham Tyneside Foyer in Newcastle have had their work placed on permanent display at Home Group’s head office.

The group of six aged between 16 -19 years-old train at the Stonham Tyneside Foyer in Westgate Road and now their work, completed as part of their Community Placement, takes pride of place in The Space which is a not- for-profit staff restaurant at Home Group’s offices in Gosforth. The mural shows six young people each holding up a letter spelling out the word ‘listen’.

One of the artists, Simon Abraham, 19, said: “We created the art by taking loads of photos before making the image on a computer at the Tyneside Foyer. It was really fun to work as a team and everyone has had something to bring to this project.”

Home Group’s Chief Executive, Mark Henderson, said: “We are delighted with the mural. The young people involved have dedicated a lot of time and energy to create what is a very thought provoking piece of artwork. Displaying the mural in our restaurant is important to us because we want it to be a daily reminder to our staff that our customers, like the young people at Stonham’s Tyneside Foyer, are at the heart of everything we do.”

Home Group’s Executive Director Care and Support, Rachael Byrne, said: “The artists have really done a great job. I think the mural has been created in a dynamic and exciting way.”

All of the artists who took part received a digital camera and a thank-you card from Home Group.

We are Proud of You!

1. Natalia Kell
Joined came to NECC with social and personal problems. With a lot of support we managed to overcome these and she successfully completed her e2e programme and gained her Literacy, Numeracy and Preparation to Work Certificates. Natalia progressed to the Prince’s Trust and completed their 12 weeks Personal Development course, during this time she kept her CV up to date and with further support and guidance from Carol Mack her tutor at the Chamber, she qualified for and gained an Apprenticeship through NECC doing Business Administration with a company called Straight 2 Business.

2. Steven Cannell
Joined NECC and was uncertain as to where he was going or what he wanted to do. He signed up for the p4p programme and on completion, decided that he wanted to join the Army. With support from his tutor Carol, the forms for Her Majesty’s Army were completed and he progressed to the Prince’s Trust to work on improving his fitness levels. Since making this decision about his future, Steven has become more positive about life, and this has had a knock on effect with regards to his communicating both with his peers and other adults.

3. Nicola Ramsay
Joined NECC also uncertain about her future plans but very aware that she needed to improve her literacy and numeracy grades. During the programme 1 to 1 and group sessions were conducted to help Nicola overcome her communication and self esteem barriers. Nicola produced some excellent project work for her Preparation to Work and Personal and Social Development course. Nicola upgraded her literacy and numeracy skills to a grade C. She then moved on to an Apprenticeship programme through NECC doing Business Administration with a company called Auto Lock.

John Glenn is our rising star!

John started at Parks in March 09. He was very shy and really did not enjoy the class room atmosphere. Arrangements were made for him to improve his literacy and numeracy skills at Trinity's Learning Hub. As a result of his regular visits to the hub, he got his level one in literacy and numeracy and progressed to Newcastle City Council on a Gardening Apprenticeship in August 09.

Using the skills and knowledge he picked up from his time at Parks he got through the rigorous interview stage and is now making good progress at the Council, and is also doing his NVQ level 2 in Horticulture.

Mario's at Your Home Newcastle!

Mario started at Parks 1 June 09 and progressed to Your Homes Newcastle on a Gardening Apprenticeship in Oct 09.
Using the skills and knowledge he had picked up from his time at Parks he got through the rigorous interview stage and is now making good progress at Your Homes Newcastle where he has completed the application to get a full time contract.

Mario was not keen on class work, but through his one day weekly session at Trinity’s Learning Hub, he developed a tolerance for being in the class room and, as part of his apprenticeship, is doing his NVQ level 2 in Horticulture.

Way to go Mario!

Kali hated school and had been on part time education for 2 years before applying for e2e. She had thoughts about working in the retail sector and managing her own clothes shop but lacked the confidence to apply for jobs.

She started her e2e programme in September 2009; she was quiet, shy and uncertain about her future. A placement was arranged for her at Cancer Research, as a retail assistant. Kali enjoyed her work placement and liked being part of the team. She became very popular and known for her dependability.

Kali went form strength to strength, gaining confidence, honing her skills in customer service, till work, stock control and gaining a City & Guilds 7546 Employability and Personal Development qualification. All this in 20 weeks!

When Dean started his e2e programme in June 2009 he was shy, lacking in confidence and unsure of what he wanted to do.

DeanHe had an interest in the retail sector and liked to be kept busy and active.

CSV arranged a work placement trial for him at British Heart Foundation in Byker as a customer service /warehouse assistant. Dean completed his work trial and decided that he liked the staff and wanted to be part of the team.
His responsibilities included: warehouse stock deliveries; keeping the warehouse organised and clean & tidy; assisting customers by taking goods to their cars and even testing electrical goods before sale. Dean showed commitment to his team members and never let them down by taking unnecessary days off. He was always being on time.

Dean was interested in finding paid work in the retail sector and began his inquiries during his job search sessions at CSV. When a vacancy became available at Republic in Eldon Square Dean was given support to complete his application. During the next week or two Dean practiced his interview techniques and was rewarded with an interview.

Two nerve racking days later Dean was told that he had been successful and was offered a temporary job until Christmas. This was exciting but a bit disappointing, as Dean wanted a full time job. He did accept the offer and started immediately! Dean worked hard right up to Christmas but was made redundant while Republic closed its doors, prior to its move to the new Debenhams store due to open in February. Dean was disappointed and seemed back to square one.

The week after Christmas Dean received a phone call from his manager inviting him for an interview for their new store.

Yes, of course, he was again successful, and if you go into Debenhams you will see the smiling face of a bright, confident and successful (once e2e) young man.
