06/02/2012Well done Craig!

Craig's landed a full time job at National Tyres!

I started Trinity Solutions in December 2010, at the time I was not sure that motor vehicle maintenance was what I wanted to do.

Well done Craig!

I was working part time in a shop in the Metrocentre to earn a few extra pounds on top of my EMA but knew that the retail industry was not for me. After working in the garage for a few weeks I realised that I enjoyed getting my hands dirty fixing cars, the staff showed me the correct repair procedures and helped me gain my Level 1 Award qualification.

At times I know I was hard work because I thought I knew best and I would question instructions. As time went along I realised that I could learn a lot more if I listened and completed the practical tasks that were set for me.

In July 2011 I finished the full Level 1 programme and started a placement at National Tyres and Autocare, Bath Lane, Newcastle.

The chance to work on a variety of customer cars really appealed to me, I was on placement 2 days and still working on my functional skills 1 day a week but I liked it so much I asked to work the other 2 days. As I was working at my placement 4 days a week and doing my Functional Skills on the other day, I had to finish my Metrocentre job. This was not a hard decision but I did loose out on money as I was only paid for 3 days.

During my time on placement I was asked to cover at different depots, this was new for me. There was a vacancy at another depot and Darren my manager put my name forward to the area manager saying I was "the best learner he had worked with in a very long time".

I started full time employment in November 2011 and I am really enjoying the work and the wages are not bad either. I would like to thank all the staff at Trinity Solutions for sticking by me and showing faith in me and helping me gain full time employment.

19/12/2011Chicken Run

Battery chickens rescued.

Fans of the film Chicken Run will be surprised to hear of an unlikely escape for chickens in Newcastle.

Chicken Run

An education project in Byker, run by the crime reduction charity Nacro, has managed to save six chickens from short and and miserable lives on a battery farm. The chickens were all rescued from a crowded factory barn after animal care staff contacted Fresh Start for Hens, a local battery hen rescue group, and are being nursed back to health by staff and learners at the Nacro centre on Welbeck Road.

The Foundation Learning Animal Care programme, accredited by City and Guilds and run by Nacro, teaches young people to care properly for all kinds of animals - from turtles to tarantulas - as well as providing lessons in maths, IT and English. The course graduates go on to a variety of jobs in the animal world, from veterinary assistant to dog grooming.

Jess Highmoor, the animal care unit manager, said: 'At first I was worried that the chickens wouldn't survive. They were in a terrible state and could hardly walk due to the conditions in which they had been kept. But with proper care they are slowly making a good recovery, and we've now got more eggs than we can eat!'

We've had all sorts of animals here at the centre, but none of them have come to us in as bad a condition as the chickens. Thankfully the students here have been brilliant in providing the care the chickens need.

Ashleigh Dillon, one of the students on the animal care course, said: 'I think it's great because they have a second chance of a better life, and we get the experience of working with farm animals.'

28/11/2011Team Mosaic

Here is a picture of the FL learners from DCS East after they had completed their mosaic signs project.

Team Mosaic

The signs read "KEEP WORK AREA TIDY" and "RESPECT OTHER PEOPLES WORK." The lads spent a long time stencilling the letters onto the wall, then breaking up tiles into small pieces and using adhesive to stick them to the wall.

They worked really well together as a team, enjoyed the creative process and were very proud of their finished product.

01/11/2011A day in Linda's diary

Visit to Police Headquarters in Durham

A day in Linda's diary

Arrived on time. We went on trip to the Durham police station. At first we had a presentation with loads of slides to see what the risks when you speed in your car and the damage it can do to people sometimes causing death :( Then we headed on to the driving lessons, pass and go, I nearly crashed about 4 times but got the hang of it at the end. It was really good even though Jade was screaming at the back of the car in case I killed her :) ha ha.

We then got to go in the car with one of the qualified instructor's of skid cars. Had a good laugh doing that then had another presentation about what signs are on the road and what kind of materials they can use. It was bit boring at first but we left :/ then we done loads of other things after that like drunk driving, talked to the fire brigade people and they showed us a presentation and then a competition to see who could take the wheel off the fastest. Lewis in our group won. Well done! We all learnt loads of good things but learned bad things too about the risks of drink driving and speed driving had a really good day I would love to go back there one day :)

19/04/2011Adam Hall

Warmsley’s Furnishings

Adam started at DCS on a P4P programme, and then progressed onto E2E. During his time with us, he secured a placement with Derek Tait Builders where he gained experience of being in a working environment. This also increased his confidence levels and after 3 months on placement, Adam decided to return to centre where he completed his 6217 City and Guilds level 1 in Basic Construction. He also achieved his CIEH level 1 in Health and Safety in the Workplace. Adam was always keen to find employment and was motivated in his job search. He completed a CV at the Hub, and would update this regularly with his work experience and achievements. Adam then secured an interview with Warmsley’s furnishings in Newcastle City Centre. He impressed at the interview and was asked to complete a 3 day work trial. At the end of the 3rd day, Adam was advised that he would be offered the position of trainee salesperson, and began employment with them on 13th September 2010.

28/10/2010Residential at Kielder

Residential at Kielder

Painting
As part of the ASDAN Employability Award one of our Mechanic groups arranged a residential to Kielder to complete their working with others unit. The group booked a cabin to stay overnight, arranged the transport, worked to a budget and agreed the work they would be carrying out for Parks and Countryside Training.

The group all met at the Hub and the first stop was Morrisons for supplies as the group also had to cook dinner and breakfast. When we arrived at Kielder we got straight on wire brushing and re-staining the cabin, the group all worked really hard to get the staining finished before it got dark. The group completed the painting on 2 ends and the rear of the cabin before the sunset.

Later in the evening the group cooked dinner and then we spent some time down at the lakeside building a fire. The group also enjoyed a social chat with tutors about their progression and how they are looking forward to learning more motor vehicle skills with Gateshead College, and we all enjoyed a few games to relax in the evening. The project was a great success and enjoyed by the whole group.

I am pleased to say that the group have all passed there Level 1 Employability Skills Award.

The staff at the hub would like to thank the group for all their hard work, commitment and making the residential an enjoyable experience.

Sponsored Bike Ride

Sponsored Bike Ride

On the 28th September 2010 John Hewitt, Bradley Johnston, Chloe Dempsey, Michael Rookes and Aidan Galbraith all took part in a 10 mile sponsored bike ride for Marie Curie Cancer (Supervised by Lorna Hendry, Andrew Butler & Mike Myers).

As part of their ASDAN Employability Award Unit 4 they had to come up with an idea for working with others. After much deliberation as a group it was agreed that we would do the bike ride. It took many weeks of planning to organise this event including bike hire, sponsorship, venue, date and cycle route. Every learner had their own task to complete and successfully completed it therefore completing their unit as part of their qualification.
Wheelie

As a group they managed to raise £65 for Marie Curie Cancer and a special thank you to Shaun Millington who unfortunately couldn't take part on the day due to illness but he managed to raise a big majority of the money.

Well done to all the learners who took part and raised money for charity.

Josh's Move

Josh2
Josh started with Parks in Oct 09. He moved to Newcastle from Durham mainly to get himself straightened out and make a new start.

He had various convictions and was under YOT supervision, attending DnA sessions while living temporarily with his sister.

Josh was a keen and able worker and wanted to get a job but his past record and no qualifications made it very difficult. He was determined to do better and started on an E2E (now Foundation Learning FL) course at Trinity Solutions Parks department.

In Sep, less than 1 year after moving to Newcastle, Josh progressed to a full-time apprenticeship with Newcastle City Council in the Highways department, he also was found accommodation at the Foyer and whilst at Trinity/Parks he passed his Foundation Learning in Maths, English, ICT and Employability as well as completed an Award in Practical Horticulture Skills.

He is now well on the way to turning his life around.

Well done Josh, keep up the good work!!

Abbey's Story

Abbey

On the 13th July 2009 I started the E2E Hairdressing course at Salon Skills.

I had no experience and no qualifications when I came to Salon Skills. But I received loads of support and I passed all of my assessments and all of my units.

I tried to complete my Level 1 in Basic skills; I do feel like I could have tried harder in this. I've finished my file and now have my NVQ Level 1.

I feel more confident with myself and feel confident around others. I am ready to take my next steps and move on to my NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing at Newcastle College which I start on 6th September 2010.

Thanks to all the staff for putting up with me for the past year.

By Abbey Lappin.

Chris
Castle in background

Newcastle United Learning Center's visit to the North East coast.

This was a trip to discover a little bit more about the castles, history and heritage of the North East and to then document the trip with video and photography, which would later be edited into a small film.

The trip provided Chris, Steve and Dave with an opportunity to demonstrate responsible behaviour within a group, to show respect for each other and members of the public and then to compile their feelings and views on camera.

Watch this space for their upcoming film about what they discovered!

25/05/2010Keep Smiling Shaunna

Keep up the good work Shaunna!

Keep Smiling Shaunna

When Shaunna came to Rathbone she had no qualifications and was unsure of what she wanted to do. Being a young parent also provided some challenges, but this did not stop Shaunna, since at Rathbone, we design our learning programmes to suit the needs of our young people. Hard work and caring guidance paid off, because Shauna has since achieved her C&G Level 1 Literacy.

Recently Shaunna experienced bereavement. Despite this, she was always on time, attended everyday, produced good work and maintained a good sense of humour. Shauna has a reputation for being positive. She dances when she is happy and after she has been praised. This makes her fellow students and tutors all smile. Her caring nature, positivity and team spirit won her the Achiever of the Month for April 2010 Award.

Keep up the good work Shaunna!

20/02/2010Ofsted

Ofsted, Matrix and IAG

In 2009 the E2E staff and learners at Stonham Tyneside Foyer were visited by Ofsted. What the inspector observed impressed her to the point of referring another Ofsted inspector to see how the E2E staff link Every Child Matters into their learners Curriculum.

The second Inspector found that the team use the ECM themes to guide their provision, curriculum, meeting agendas, learner forum agenda and session plans. This integration, he decided, was innovative and creative. He interviewed staff and learners and informed everyone that an article would be placed about the E2E team and learners on the Excellence Gateway website as an example of good practice to other training providers.

This recognition by Ofsted of the standards of work delivered by the E2E team is further reflected by the whole training team being awarded the Matrix Standard and all E2E training staff completing their NVQ Level 4 in Information, Advice and Guidance, a key part of their role.

If you would like to read the Ofsted article, please go to: Good Practice

Housing Officer Vicky

Housing Officer Vicky

In early March 2009, Vicky came to E2E in the hopes of gaining qualifications, increasing her employment knowledge and completing work experience as a housing officer. She was very motivated but a little daunted about working in a "classroom" environment again; she hadn't enjoyed school and left when she was 14.

In the following nine months Vicky made spectacular progress.

She worked hard in her Functional Skills sessions, working overtime in some instances, and this helped her achieve Level 1 qualifications in English, Maths and ICT. She then completed qualifications in New Clait and Clait Plus, too, before finishing the Text and Word Processing Certificate. She also completed a Freedom Programme course, which helped her to understand Domestic Violence and the issues some of Home Group's tenants face.

Vicky started a Work Placement at Stonham Home's Arthurs Hill project in April 2009. She worked alongside housing officers and as the placement was specific to her career she excelled and thoroughly enjoying her time there. She was so motivated to succeed that she wrote to numerous housing associations, including Home Group Ltd, and soon enough her name was being mentioned in board meetings!

Vicky's hard work paid off when she was offered a job with Home Group based at Belmont in Durham. She started there the day after finishing her E2E course and remains there now.

Vicky is hoping that in the future she can gain an NVQ in Housing that will further help her on her career path.

Aaron's Done Well!

Written in Stone

Aaron started his E2E programme in December 2008 and over the next year worked on placement with Joseph Richards and Sons Stonemasons in Newcastle. While on E2E, Aaron completed his Health and Safety qualifications as well as work on his Functional Skills in Maths and English. He also completed specific training from the British Register of Accredited Stonemasons at his placement on Polishing and Stencilling.

His placement mentor, Simon, took Aaron under his wing and trained Aaron in all aspects of Stonemasonry. Aaron excelled in this work and completed his NVQ Level 2 in Monumental Masonry, paid for by JR & Sons, as part of his placement. JR & Sons then offered Aaron a full time permanent position which he gladly accepted and is currently still in employment, enjoying every moment of it!

Lewis Bell

For his family

Lewis started Parks Jan 09. As a young father he wanted to be involved in his child's day to day upbringing while trying to get an education and to be able to support his family. On his first visit Lewis said that he wanted to work for the Council preferable in Highways. Lewis had started a college course, but did not like it because it was "too much class room stuff."

Coming to Parks was exactly what he needed, outdoor, hands on practical experience, with one day of literacy and numeracy assistance. While Lewis did not enjoy the class room atmosphere, with the support received at the Trinity's Learning Hub he achieved his level 1 in literacy and numeracy, progressed to Newcastle City Council on a Highways Apprenticeship in August 09, and, as part of his apprenticeship, he is doing his NVQ level 2 in Horticulture.

IMI

IMI Awards

IMI1
Recently Trinity Solutions applied for and were successfully registered to deliver the Institute of Motor Industries (IMI), Entry Level 3 Diploma in motor vehicle maintenance and Repair.
Initially seven learners were registered and started work on their portfolio's.

At the same time Trinity's management team worked to bring in Internal Verification Procedures (IV) to match the standards set by IMI Awards.

As a result all seven of the originally registered learners have achieved the award in Entry level 3 motor vehicle maintenance and repair.

So a big well done to Simon Appleby, Michael Douglas, Leon Dunkerly, Oliver Jopling, Daniel King, Chris Wright and David Scott. A lot of hard work went into producing the portfolio to the correct standards.

Further success followed when after our first External Verification visit, Trinity Solutions were awarded Direct Claims Status which gives us the ability to issue certificates on behalf of IMV.

Oliver Jopling joined us at Trinity in late July 09. Lacking in confidence, he took the introduction to Entry level 3 motor mechanics. A placement was arranged near his home and there he gained valuable 'hands on' experience working in the garage for 3 months, While at the placement Oliver received invaluable experience working on customers cars, but he needed more theoretical training. He was enrolled on the Entry level 3 introduction to Vehicle Technology programme; he worked hard and passed with flying colours, and is now working towards getting his certificate.

Permanent Display

Young artists from the E2E programme at Stonham Tyneside Foyer in Newcastle have had their work placed on permanent display at Home Group’s head office.

The group of six aged between 16 -19 years-old train at the Stonham Tyneside Foyer in Westgate Road and now their work, completed as part of their Community Placement, takes pride of place in The Space which is a not- for-profit staff restaurant at Home Group’s offices in Gosforth. The mural shows six young people each holding up a letter spelling out the word ‘listen’.

One of the artists, Simon Abraham, 19, said: “We created the art by taking loads of photos before making the image on a computer at the Tyneside Foyer. It was really fun to work as a team and everyone has had something to bring to this project.â€

Home Group’s Chief Executive, Mark Henderson, said: “We are delighted with the mural. The young people involved have dedicated a lot of time and energy to create what is a very thought provoking piece of artwork. Displaying the mural in our restaurant is important to us because we want it to be a daily reminder to our staff that our customers, like the young people at Stonham’s Tyneside Foyer, are at the heart of everything we do.â€

Home Group’s Executive Director Care and Support, Rachael Byrne, said: “The artists have really done a great job. I think the mural has been created in a dynamic and exciting way.â€

All of the artists who took part received a digital camera and a thank-you card from Home Group.

15/02/2010Great Job Natalia, Steven and Nicola!

We are Proud of You!

With support from his tutor Carol, the forms for Her Majesty’s Army were completed and he progressed to the Prince’s Trust to work on improving his fitness levels. Since making this decision about his future, Steven has become more positive about life, and this has had a knock on effect with regards to his communicating both with his peers and other adults.

3. Nicola Ramsay
Joined NECC also uncertain about her future plans but very aware that she needed to improve her literacy and numeracy grades. During the programme 1 to 1 and group sessions were conducted to help Nicola overcome her communication and self esteem barriers. To the moon and beyond

John Glenn is our rising star!

John started at Parks in March 09. He was very shy and really did not enjoy the class room atmosphere. Arrangements were made for him to improve his literacy and numeracy skills at Trinity's Learning Hub. As a result of his regular visits to the hub, he got his level one in literacy and numeracy and progressed to Newcastle City Council on a Gardening Apprenticeship in August 09.

Using the skills and knowledge he picked up from his time at Parks he got through the rigorous interview stage and is now making good progress at the Council, and is also doing his NVQ level 2 in Horticulture.

12/02/2010Kali's Apprenticeship

Great Job Kali!

kalis Apprenticeship
Kali hated school and had been on part time education for 2 years before applying for e2e. She had thoughts about working in the retail sector and managing her own clothes shop but lacked the confidence to apply for jobs.

She started her e2e programme in September 2009; she was quiet, shy and uncertain about her future. A placement was arranged for her at Cancer Research, as a retail assistant. Kali enjoyed her work placement and liked being part of the team. She became very popular and known for her dependability.

Kali went form strength to strength, gaining confidence, honing her skills in customer service, till work, stock control and gaining a City & Guilds 7546 Employability and Personal Development qualification. All this in 20 weeks!

Here are some of Kail's passport entries; judge yourself:

Vicky, manager at Cancer Research, asked if we could change Kali's days so she could be in when the shop is busier on Fridays. This is being flexible and adaptable Kali and you have shown maturity and professionalism. Well done!! MH 26.11.09

Well done Kali! You are making excellent progress with your E & PD qualification. I spoke to your manager, Lance, at Cancer Research and he is pleased with your progress. We discussed doing an apprenticeship with them and he is happy to keep you on as he thinks you are a star!! I have sent an application for an apprenticeship to Barnardos, Palmersville. MH 6.1.10
Great JOB Kali!!!

29/01/2010See You At Debenhams

When Dean started his e2e programme in June 2009 he was shy, lacking in confidence and unsure of what he wanted to do.

DeanHe had an interest in the retail sector and liked to be kept busy and active.

CSV arranged a work placement trial for him at British Heart Foundation in Byker as a customer service /warehouse assistant. Dean completed his work trial and decided that he liked the staff and wanted to be part of the team.
His responsibilities included: warehouse stock deliveries; keeping the warehouse organised and clean & tidy; assisting customers by taking goods to their cars and even testing electrical goods before sale. Dean showed commitment to his team members and never let them down by taking unnecessary days off. He was always being on time.

Dean was interested in finding paid work in the retail sector and began his inquiries during his job search sessions at CSV. When a vacancy became available at Republic in Eldon Square Dean was given support to complete his application. During the next week or two Dean practiced his interview techniques and was rewarded with an interview.

Two nerve racking days later Dean was told that he had been successful and was offered a temporary job until Christmas. This was exciting but a bit disappointing, as Dean wanted a full time job. He did accept the offer and started immediately! Dean worked hard right up to Christmas but was made redundant while Republic closed its doors, prior to its move to the new Debenhams store due to open in February. Dean was disappointed and seemed back to square one.

The week after Christmas Dean received a phone call from his manager inviting him for an interview for their new store.

Yes, of course, he was again successful, and if you go into Debenhams you will see the smiling face of a bright, confident and successful (once e2e) young man.

Fantastic job Dean!!!!!!

06/05/2009A visit to Northumbria Fire Service at Bramstone

A visit to Northumbria Fire Service at Bramstone

Dean BlackburnChris Ferris computer monitor fireOn Wednesday 15th April a hardy band of trainees and their instructors went to the Northumbria Fire and Rescue Service, Fire Training ground at Barmstone. There they undertook a short course on the different types of extinguisher available and their appropriate use.

The group were then shown a video demonstrating how quickly a fire can take hold and spread as well as the terrible consequences of the fire at Bradford Football Ground. Next the group were all kitted in proper fire fighters clothing, and taken to the training ground.

Mick the instructor, set a 'chip pan' fire and the group were shown the negative results of using water to put out such fires. Ian, the other instructor, then went on to demonstrate how to safely hold a fire blanket to correctly cover and extinguish the flames.

Under the close guidance and supervision of both Ian and Mick, all the learners were given different types of fire to tackle. Water was used on the 'waste paper bin' then dry powder and Co2, finally all in attendance were shown how to tackle a fuel fire using foam extinguishers.

Great big flames along with load of hands on experience made this an interesting and stimulating visit. The group also received a certificate from the fire service stating that they had undergone training in the safe use of Fire Extinguishers.

Well done everyone!!

Sincere thanks to Northumbria Fire and Rescue Service for giving their time freely for this course, especially Eileen Armstrong, Assistant Development Officer, as well as Ian and Mick for their endless patience and skill.

Sarah Pringle

Sarah PringleSarah worked hard on her E2E Programme and we are very proud and pleased that she is moving onto a Retail Apprenticeship with Barnardos at Palmersville. In her own words Sarah tells of her learning Journey:

“When I started at CSV I was shy and not very confident that I could do well. At CSV I really enjoyed it especially through my experience at Mind and Shelter. All the staff has been very supportive and if it wasn’t for CSV I would not be the confident person I am today. I am proud to be starting my apprenticeship but I am also sad to leave CSV as the staff has helped me through my ups and downs. I feel confident now that I will continue to do well and I have promised to stay in touch. Thank you for everything CSV!"

Jayd Grabs a Gem of a Role

Jayd

Jayd joined the E2E programme in July 2008 from the pre-16 course at Oakfield.

She had considerable personal barriers to overcome in order to progress on her course. School was very difficult for Jayd and this impacted on her behaviour. As an alternative to school she joined Trinity Solutions Pre-16 programme and attended IT and arts and crafts at Tyneside Foyer.

After progressing on to the E2E Programme, Jayd began to settle down into a routine and excelled in many subjects. She gained qualifications in IT, Food Hygiene, Literacy and Numeracy before starting a work placement at DCS, thoroughly enjoying an administration assistant role. Her positive attitude ensured she met targets and goals and gained awards for her team work and attendance.

Jayd progressed on to full time employment in February 2009, starting work at Provident Loans. She is very happy with her achievements.

The training team are very proud of Jayd for overcoming so many barriers.

Well done Jayd, continue to make us proud!

Thomas gets hired!

Thomas gets hired!

Thomas started on E2E with Trinity Solutions doing Motor Vehicles. Thomas at work

After receiving some experience at the workshop he was placed in a garage in Jesomnd for 1 day a week. This gave him further real life working experience since, “it got me into a routine and I had to get up earlier in the morning to start work, I enjoyed my time there but there was not enough work to keep me involved,” said Thomas who stayed at this assignment for 6 weeks before receiving a full time placement at Christers Garage in Byker.

At Christers Thomas was trained by the manager to do MOT’s, repair gear boxes, fit clutches, change exhausts and carry out a variety of jobs on cars. With this training along with the literacy and numeracy skills received at the Hub, “I became more confident and could do a lot of the jobs on my own.” On Friday 6th March at the end of his placement, Thomas was offered a full time position as an apprentice by his manager Mark.

Hats and "Coats" off to you Laura!

Laura successfully gained an employed apprenticeship at DCS Construction in Heaton as a receptionist. L Duff
When Laura came to Tyneside Foyer in June last year, she was very shy and lacked confidence; she would never take her coat off, never felt comfortable in group situations or using the telephone.

Through work experience on our e2e programme Laura got an opportunity to work with others in a real workplace and to be part of a team. With support from her trainers Laura has become much more confident in her self and has developed great communication and customer service skills.

Laura is now happy to answer the telephone, deal with customer’s queries and carry out other office duties.
Laura still attends the Foyer Training Centre for support with basic skills but is now happy to take her coat off!

Well done Laura!

16/01/2009Congratulations on your UXL nomination Guy

Most Impoeved nominee, Guy Jones.

Guy joined the E2E programme in October 2007, he had various personal issues to overcome in order to progress on his course. He was bullied at school and as a result dropped out of education. His confidence was very low and his motivation subdued; he found it difficult to communicate with UXL Nominee, Guy Jones others and was disappointed that he had no qualifications.

Soon after starting E2E Guy began working on his literacy and numeracy skills where he gained a Level 1 qualification in literacy and improved his numeracy skills. Guy gained employment based qualifications such as Food Hygiene, Health and Safety and also started his NVQ in hospitality. He benefited hugely from a confidence course based on alternative therapies and gained a level 1 and 2 qualification in Aromatherapy.

With his new found confidence Guy felt equipped to complete work placements at Jayz Café and the Peoples Kitchen. These placements gave him enough experience to support his application to the NVQ Level 1 Catering course at Newcastle College and he started there in September 2008. He had applied for and was granted a development award from the Princes Trust to help with the purchase of equipment needed to support him on his course. Guy started College fully prepared, both emotionally and physically, for the next step in his career.

Congratulations on your UXL Nomination Guy!!!!

Jenny's Journey

Jenny joined CSV and has successfully gained Level 1 in Numeracy and literacy. We are proud to see her confidence and self esteem grow and delighted that she is starting her Child care course at Newcastle College in September. Below in her own words is how she felt about her learning journey on the E2E Programme at CSV .
Well done Jenny !!

Jennifer's JourneyWhen I first started E2E program I was not very confident and very shy. I had no experience in childcare. Marilyn and Claire have helped me a lot with work placements and qualifications which I need for college.

I don't think I would have had enough confidence to go an enrol on the childcare course if I didn't start the program am so thankful to CSV as they have given me more than experience they have given me the chance to get one step closer to my goal and a chance for me to have a better future .

I am glad I had the chance to work at Little Angels. I was nervous at first but slowly I gained confidence and began to feel like part of the team and it made me realise if I work hard with the right people I can do anything I want. I had some doubt in myself and though I would make mistakes but everyone has said I have done excellent work and I would do well in college. I am going to miss working on this program because of all the friendly people I have worked with. The atmosphere is great and makes me feel at ease. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at CSV because you have helped me a lot.

Layton SandersonLayton Sanderson transferred to the Foyer e2e programme after trying gardening at Oakfield which he felt was not for him. He was homeless, had little motivation and needed extra support to build up his confidence. Layton said he was at a loss and unsure about what he wanted to do. He also needed support with basic skills.

Layton feels he has really started to sort himself out. His attendance is 100%, he has passed his literacy level 1 qualification, gained a placement with a plastering and tiling company and applied for an apprenticeship with a large construction company.

The staff is really pleased with Layton's positive attitude. Way to go Layton!!!

Gemma Postlewait

Gemma PostlewaitGemma started E2E at Oakfield's Salon Skills in November 06. She was quite shy, needed support with literacy and numeracy and had issues with self esteem.

Gemma enjoyed the beauty side of the business and was motivated to make something of herself. She received one to one assistance and coaching and was continually encouraged to engage in new social situations and to expand her comfort zone.

Gemma's hard work did not go unnoticed; it contributed to her gaining a work placement for two days a week at U Salon. In March, 07 Gemma started college and was awarded top student in her group. She has since completed her NVQ level 1 and is working towards level 2 in Beauty Therapy. Well Done Gemma, keep up the good work!

Way to go Kate!

kate cathcartKate started E2E at Oakfield's Salon Skills in September 07. Due to bullying, Kate was not comfortable in the school setting and lacked confidence when dealing with groups. Kate was also unsure of which career path to follow.

Kate and her advisor at Salon Skills decided to first work on her literacy and numeracy skills. Quickly Kate received a level 1 in both and then slowly worked on increasing her contact with different groups of different sizes. This helped immensely with her confidence; however Kate was still not quite sure what she wanted to do.

She was given experience in both Hair and Beauty and chose to do Hairdressing. She secured a placement with Hair at Leaze for 1 day a week and continued to make progress. Kate's confidence improved so much that she applied for and successfully attained an apprenticeship at Toni and Guy. Well done! We knew you could do it Kate.

Kyle Palmer (1st from right)

kyle's on to biger things
Kyle started with Oakfield in the Parks department in September 07; he had missed much of his last 2 years at school due a health problem. When he started his strength and stamina were quite low. Kyle was diagnosed with dyslexia while this affected his literacy skills, his numeracy; especially mental arithmetic is outstanding.

As he continued on the program his strength and stamina improved and he fully participated in all activities, achieving competency certificates on various horticultural machines as well as park maintenance and hard landscaping elements.
His timekeeping, attendance and attitude were always spot on and he was keen to progress.

Kyle was ready to take his Level 1 numeracy tests through his essential skills lessons but before he could do it, he was accepted on a full time course at Newcastle College in Jan where he is working on his BTEC Certificate in Horticulture. He is now near the end of his first term and his tutors are very pleased with his progress.

Kyle continues to impress his tutors with his positive attitude and exemplary attendance and timekeeping. He is successfully overcoming any barriers to completing his studies. He is well liked by the staff and is a pleasure to teach.

Excellent work Kyle!

George Preps Well for College

George BeardGeorge joined the P4P programme at the Foyer in July 2007. He needed extra support in literacy and numeracy as well as with his confidence and communication. He previously worked on Rathbone's pre-16 programme where he enjoyed a taster in catering.

While at the Foyer, a placement was arranged in a small cafe where they were very supportive. George enjoyed working with the general public and as a result his confidence soon grew. Through one to one sessions in literacy and numeracy, his skills improved and he progressed on to the e2e programme in September, 07.

George is keen to go to college this September to pursue a career in hospitality. To do this, the Foyer arranged for a new placement to be found where George would gain further practical experience and attain units towards an NVQ.

Lynsey wins UXL's Best Achievement Award

lynsey Ross2Lynsey came to the Foyer after leaving school with low levels of GCSE's. She lacked confidence and self esteem especially among people she did not know.

At first Lynsey wanted to do child care but whilst waiting for her CRB clearance she opted for a placement with Sainsbury at the Team Valley. Her interest in fashion then moved her to a placement at Ethel Austin in Byker.

Working with the public took Lynsey out of her comfort zone and increased her confidence. She went on to achieved qualifications in literacy and numeracy level 1, food safety in retail, manual handling and emergency first aid.

Currently Lynsey is doing a retail apprenticeship with Support Training in South Shields while remaining in her placement at Ethal Austin's. Her manager Alison commented, ‘Lynsey is showing great selling skills and has a good rapport with customers'.

Lynsey was nominated and later went on to win the UXL E2E Best Achievement Award. The event was held at St James Park! Congratulations Lynsey!

Duncan Mc Neil joined us at Oakfield in August 2007. He worked well in the garage and showed a great deal of interest and some skills. Because of his positive attitude and hard work he gained a placement with Keith's Coaches at Throckley.

Duncan's willingness to learn and his good attitude did not go unnoticed by his placement; they quickly noted his potential and within days approached Oakfield to sign him onto a college course and full apprenticeship. Duncan is now part of the garage team, servicing and maintaining a fleet of coaches. Very impressive Duncan!!

Star at Starbucks

Star at Starbucks
When Adam started e2e with CSV in April 2007, he needed help with his English and Maths and he wanted to gain work experience. Adam was sociable, but lacked confidence and the ability to communicate effectively.

Adam was unsure of what he wanted to do with his life, but was willing to give retail a try. As an introduction to the world of retail, Adam found a work placement at The British Red Cross charity shop. After 16 weeks and many acquired skill, his good feedback from the Red Cross convinced us that he could be given a ‘work trial' at Starbucks as a barista.

While at Starbucks, Adam proved himself to be a reliable and diligent worker who never took a day off sick or unauthorised. Adam also gained a level 1 City and Guilds Adult numeracy qualification. His hard work and the consistent support from his advisors at CSV paid off, because in November of this year, he became a fully fledged team member of Starbucks on Neville Street, Newcastle. You're a ‘Star' Adam!

20/12/2007Congrats Jessica

Congrats Jessica

Congrats Jessica
Jessica started her e2e programme here at CSV in March 2007. She was very quiet and shy, she also lacked confidence and was not sure where she was going.

A taster trial was arranged for Jessica at an award winning nursery called Little Angels in the west end of Newcastle.

Jessica enjoyed her taster and decided that she would like to give it a try. The nursery was more than happy to accept Jessica for work experience and she started in April after biding her time at a retail placement (which helped her overcome her fear of new situations).

Jessica proved herself to be a reliable member of the team and her time keeping and attendance were exemplary. As the weeks went by she grew from strength to strength and her confidence improved and she began to enjoy herself.

Through her placement Jessica developed skills in different areas such as: working with others, problem solving, reliability, working hard and caring for others. The feedback from the nursery staff was nothing but complimentary.

Jessica was later encouraged by her advisors at CSV to consider further training in child care, and a visit to Newcastle College was arranged. In August Jessica left e2e to attend Newcastle College on a 1 year CACHE course. Congratulations Jessica!

Good going Carl

Carl Graham
Carl transferred to Oakfield in June 07. From the out start Carl showed that he was a very capable young man, but lacked the motivation needed to seek and attain employment.

Initially Carl worked as part of a team building up his skills in horticultural activities and machinery. He obtained went on to gain competency certificates in using the Strimmer, Hedge cutter, Mower and Clipper.

As a further challenge Carl was chosen to work as part of a project in Leazes Park working alongside park keepers and undertaking all the park keepers' duties.

He accepted this challenge with ease and received great feedback from park keepers and the park manager who commented that they were ‘sad to see him leave' as he was thought of as ‘a good and positive asset to the Park'. Carl has now obtained a full-time position with A&E Landscaping in Cramlington. Good going Carl!

When Laura started at Nacro she was working with a number of other organisations to help her with offending and substance misuse issues. She never engaged in school or training and didn't really want to start on a course. However, staff worked with her to help her find a suitable route of training that she enjoyed. Laura started to attend child care sessions and although she finished working with the outside support agencies she found that she wanted to continue with at Nacro. Laura has worked exceptionally hard to maintain her attendance and has overcome a lot of barriers. She is now an excellent group member and is respected by all her peers. She is currently working with staff to help her find out what she would like to do next.

02/08/2007Aaron is cooking in Cork

Great Job Aaron!!!

Aaron was between homes when he arrived at the Foyer. He had no qualifications to get a job and felt that his life was in a mess. Anti-social behaviour kept Aaron continuously in trouble. Despite his chaotic life he joined our e2e programme here at the Foyer with hopes of turning his life around. Aaron Wallace

Aaron received the help he needed with his maths, English and IT skills and was also able to improve his behaviour by working closely with his training advisor at the Foyer and with other agencies.

Later Aaron was given the opportunity to prove himself in a city centre cafe. He soon realised the impact of his previous behaviour and was grateful for the support he was given. He achieved loads of certificates and started to attend appointments with his YOT worker to help him stay out of trouble.
Aaron's YOT worker and the training staff at the Foyer worked together to re-unite Aaron with his mother who had moved to Cork in Ireland. Aaron enrolled in a catering course with a national training company and is doing extremely well! He keeps in touch with staff at the Foyer through e-mail and is really pleased with the support he received. He said, "without such support and backing I could have ended up in prison."

07/06/2007An interview with Sarah

Sarah has gained a placement at Penny Farling in Gosforth, she so impressed the salon manager with her positive attitude and willingness that he offered her an apprenticeship.

Sarah @ placement
How long have you been with Oakfield?
I started in October of last year.

Did you receive any support from staff to achieve your goals?
I got a lot of help from my advisors. At first I didn't really think I needed it, but they worked with me to improve my communication skills, to deal with stress and with anger management.

What has been the hardest thing for you whilst you've been training with Oakfield?
Talking in front of people and feeling comfortable. At first I wanted to stay off, but now I am a lot more confident.

What has helped you the most at Oakfield?
Oakfield has been the best; you were not treated as everyone else. I felt like I mattered.

What would you say to someone else thinking about joining hairdressing at Oakfield?
There is no such word as "Can't"!

Sarah so impressed the salon manager with her positive attitude and willingness that he offered her an apprenticeship. Great job Sarah we are very excited for you!

John CampbellWhen John Campbell started on E2E, he never imagined that his life would take the course it has. As he was uncertain about his career path, John tried several tasters in construction, administration, warehousing and even considered a career in gardening.

While on E2E John also played for local teams and organised and took part in football tournaments against other training providers. He was integral to the success of his team, persistently scoring goals. At one of these games, whilst playing for Cramlington Juniors, Barry Poynton, Scout for Manchester City, noticed John's talents and asked him to go to Manchester for football trials.

A mere 2 months later, having completed his first trials for the club, John was asked to return. Steph Brown, John's Training Advisor at Rathbone Skills, received a telephone call from John saying: "… they can't give me a scholarship contract, Steph … they've got better news, they're gonna give me a professional contract!"

John will be playing for Manchester City's under 17's youth team, as a striker, from 6th March 2006.

Well done John! All the best from the Newcastle E2E team.

NCL ShellyI went to college as soon as I left school but after the first term I felt that the course that I was doing didn't meet the needs of my intentions for employment in the future. So I went to Connexions and I was told about NACRO. This was the only organisation that ran a course that I felt suited my needs the most.

I joined NACRO in January 2004. When I first started I was put straight onto work placement however, I still felt a little unsure about whether I had made the right choice in leaving college and I did have a few problems. With help from the staff I worked through and resolved these problems and have achieved my NVQ Level 1 in Sport and Recreation. I am now on work placement four days a week.

My confidence has grown since I joined Nacro and I now have an even better view of my future employment and feel that NACRO can help me achieve this.

I have gained many qualifications since I started here these are:

  • NVQ Level 1 in Sport and Recreation
  • Basic First Aid Certificate
  • Health and Safety Certificate
  • Millennium Volunteers Award 100 and 200 hours
  • Volunteer of the Year Award 2004
  • Deaf Awareness
  • Introduction to British Sign Language
  • Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award
  • Level 1 Youth Work
  • CSLA

I am also working towards:

  • NVQ Level 2 in Sport and Recreation
  • Advanced British Sign Language
  • Trail Cycle Leadership Award
  • BELA
  • FA Level 1
  • VRQ Level 2
  • Canoe Leadership Award

I hated school and didn't go much because I was bullied. Connexions told me about Nacro and the Animal Care NVQ. I wasn't sure at first but went to see them any way. I was shy and nervous and took my uncle with me for support. The interview was friendly and informal, the staff ok, and I was told that bullying was not tolerated.

NCL PaulMy reading and writing was very poor. This showed at induction, but the staff help me every week in the training room and I get extra support with E2E Plus. Now I am doing very well.

The animals here are lovely and I have a good time. The young people are friendly and good fun, the trainers are very helpful. When I am ready I will be going on placement. I hope I will enjoy it, but I'm not sure because I've never done anything like it before. The good thing about it is I know I won't get bullied any more because Nacro staff will make sure it doesn't happen.

I know now that I can go to people for help and there are some things I don't have to put up with any more. I feel happier about myself and look forward to coming to Nacro.

NACRO Learner strimming 1Shaun Storey always wanted to be landscape gardener. Starting his NVQ with Nacro he now looks forward to working in the family business.

I always wanted to be landscape gardener. Connexions sent me for an interview at Nacro where I can gain an NVQ in Horticulture. My dad has his own business as a landscape gardener and I can work with him when I get my qualification.

Nacro's horticulture trainer asked my dad to take me on placement with his company. This is good for me as I will be trained by Nacro and also get used to working with my dad. Within two weeks of starting at Nacro I went into placement after doing my induction and Health & Safety training.

I am working towards completing Key Skills units. The staff from Basic Skills work with me in the Nacro garden helping me with estimating, ratio and measurements that apply to the horticulture NVQ. The Nacro trainers are working with my placement host to see that I am given the right work and training for my NVQ. I have sat Health & Safety and Basic First Aid qualifications.

So far I have laid a patio, erected two 6 foot board and rail fences and will be laying turf, putting in a pond and building raised flowerbeds in the Nacro garden.
